Smells Like Teen Spirit

I have to admit that I was intrigued with the idea of two bright young winemakers making perfume.

Who would’ve thunk it?

Brendan Carter and Samuel Eads of the Adelaide Hills certainly did when they began their adventure witEmerald Vintners Parfums (EVP).

I became interested in a career involving the frequent use of my schnoz ever since my parents noticed that I had a pretty good nose as a child. When it came to perfumes, I had a particular knack for identifying the fragrance on passers by. So it was lovely to receive a small sample of EVP’s inaugural range that are suitably titled and inspired by the world of wine.

PERFUME 1: Baumé

Described by EVP as: A brisk morning stroll through the Adelaide Hills cherry farms as the low mist diffuses between the bare trunks. The sweet scent of honeysuckle in the air, an all-encompassing incense of innocence.

Inspired by: Off-dry Riesling watching the sunrise over fields of cherry blossoms

Comments: White florals and honeysuckle with an overall clean soapy scent

Would be worn by: Rita Hayworth

Charming without being too sweet

PERFUME 2: Brix

Described by EVP as: A summer afternoon walk through a seaside citrus orchard, the waves breaking against the rocks as the air becomes filled with candied citrus oil. The dazzling sun throwing beams of light from each perfectly orange sphere of mandarin essence.

Inspired by: Fiano under a citrus tree in the heart of the Hills, overlooking Piccadilly Valley.

Comments: Floral without being too pretty, lovely lemon citrus, verbena and a hint of eucalyptus

Would be worn by: Katherine Hepburn

Pretty but ballsy

PERFUME 3: Dosage

Described by EVP as: An autumn light dancing off the yellow and orange leaves. The golden forest inhabited by prancing deer. Surrounded by the crackle of antlers, the incense of musk and dried flowers abound.

Inspired by: Tempranillo Touriga in the Barrel Hall overlooking an autumn-time vineyard.

Comments: Initial impression of caramel fudge followed immediately by cinnamon spice and an undertone of sweet rosewater. The more male of the three and my favourite with less emphasis on the florals and more on dark spice.

Would be worn by: Clarke Gable

Dark and dashing. My favourite. What a surprise.

Baume, Brix and Dosage are available to purchase as small sample sizes for $7.99 or in 45ml bottles for $84.99 from their online store.

I am intrigued too with winemakers preparing perfume! I think I would like the Baumé best!
